Bishop Alexis' Nativity Sermon

Beloved in Christ brothers and sisters!

Greetings on the feast of the Nativity of our Lord!

This incomprehensible and great wonder occurred more than 20 centuries ago in the regions of Bethlehem. It is in this incomprehensibility to mortal man that the Divine Services of the feast strongly reflect on. The Virgin gives birth and remains a Virgin. The Consubstantial becomes Flesh. The Eternal and Ever-present one comes to the manger. The star announces the Creator of the universe and all galaxies, who below this celestial throne, takes up abode in a manger of dumb beasts. The King of kings, glorified by all the Heavenly Hosts comes to earth not to be served by mortal man but to save him.

In His Nativity our Lord calls us to "Humble your pride and love your neighbor and him who despises you;" "I will accept you not in a humble manger but in the Heavenly Palace of my Father."

Let us hasten to hear, and moreover follow this calling. Let us increase our good actions and knowledge of God as the God-man grew in the time of His earthly life.

Blessed are the shepherds of Bethlehem, recognizing the Lord at the beginning of His earthly path. Blessed are the apostles seeing the light of the Transfiguration of our Lord at the completion of His worldly path.

Contemplation of the glory of God left its mark on the face of Moses. Let the glory of the Nativity of our Lord leave a mark likewise on our hearts. Let our hearts shine with love to Christ our Savior as did the face of the God-seeing Prophet.

Amen!

Christ is born, glorify Him! Christ on earth, go to meet Him!
