Nativity Epistle of Archbishop Vladimir

In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Beloved in Christ fathers, brothers and sisters!

I greet you with the great feast of the Nativity of Christ!
All Orthodox hearts rejoice at the singing of Christ is born because this feast is the revelation of a great mercy of God to mankind.

The entire history of mankind is revealed in two major occurrences – the fall into sin and redemption. The first is the work of man, the second the work of God's Word. God appeared in the flesh (1 Tim 3-16) The word became flesh, and dwelt among us in the fullness of grace and truth (John 1-14). As the holy Apostles bear witness, the Sun of righteousness is revealed, enlightening the whole of creation with His Divine Light through which we are given light and wisdom that we may know him that is true, even in his son Jesus Christ (1 John 5-20).

Herod as well recognized the true God, wishing to kill the God-child Christ, unsuccessful in his desire, meeting a horrible end to his own life. What drove Herod to such an abnormal harshness so as to murder fourteen thousand innocents? What passions blinded him, that in his blindness he spilled so much innocent blood?

Besides such love of power and love of glory, besides extraordinary ferocity and cruelty is great suspicion. We find an explanation of this in the holy Gospel, When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the male children in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under(Matt 2-16).

Herod saw himself mocked by the Magi, resulting in such hatred. But did the Magi really wish to spite Herod as he suspected? No, as explained in the Gospel, And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route (Matt 2-12).

Epistle of the Bishops' Council 26 September/9 October 2009

Epistle of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad Bishops' Council
 to our clergy and flock

Beloved in Christ fathers, brothers and sisters in the homeland and in the diaspora!

We, the bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, having gathered in Montreal (Canada) for the regular Bishops' Council after the glorification among the saints of Hierarch Philaret the Confessor, inform you of a trial that has befallen our Church.  A fire that occurred in the Saint Seraphim Church in Montreal created a significant loss to the Montreal parish and our Church.
First of all we would like to express a word of sympathy and support to the parish of Venerable Seraphim of Sarov.  The Lord allowed this fiery trial not only to the Montreal parish but to all of us, especially the hierarchy and the clergy, on the eve of the Council which is a work not only of the bishops but is an event for the whole Church.  Because "if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honored, all the members rejoice with it" (1 Cor.

Icons for the Glorification of Metropolitan Philaret

For the canonization day of Metropolitan Philaret, with the blessing of the Council of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad , one of his spiritual children painted an icon of the Hierarch, called Kostromskaia (city in Russia called Kostroma), which is in fact the main icon of the new church feastday. Two other icons, called New Yorkskaya (painted in New York) and  Kievskaya, (painted in Kiev) were also specially painted for this glorification and  are also in effect official icons of the feastday.

Paschal Epistle of Bishop Vladimir

Christ is Risen!

Dear in the Lord fathers, brethren and sisters!

I congratulate all of you with the bright and radiant Feast of Christ's Resurrection! This Paschal night, as well as during the services of the entire Paschal period, the temple is full with the sounds of the best New Testament Church hymn: "Christ is risen from the dead, having conquered death by death and to those in the tombs bestowing life."

With His sufferings, His death on the Cross and His wondrous Resurrection, our Lord Jesus Christ has reconciled us with God, freed us from the burden of the ancient law, sanctified our human nature, restored it and saved it from death by taking it into an eternal union with Himself.

Christ's Resurrection is an image of the general resurrection of all people; even to the pagans and sinners, who also possess  human nature, the Savior has promised an eternity. However, what kind of an eternity it will be, that will depend on the measure of each person's fulfillment of God's Truth and God's laws.

"We celebrate death's annihilation, the destruction of hell and the beginning of a different, eternal life!" And why these two triumphant words, "Christ is Risen!", are so joyous ? That is because our soul, which is immortal, feels that eternal life of which they speak. The Orthodox Church with great magnificence and splendor celebrates Christ's Resurrection, understanding its deep meaning and distinguishes these bright days with special Paschal services in the great hopes of our salvation.

Bishop Alexei's Nativity Epistle

Bishop Alexei's Nativity Epistle

"Christ is born, glorify Him!"

More than two thousand years ago these words sounded in the quiet of the Nativity night, announcing the nearing of the end of the unlighted night of sin, despondency and disobedience to God, which started from the moment of our forefathers fall into sin and reached its peak at that time.

Bishop Anastassy's Nativity Epistle

"Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, good will toward men." (Luke 2, 14)

These wonderful angelic words we hear very often in the services of the Orthodox Church on the feast of Christ's Nativity. The holy angels, descending to earth, announced to the people of peace on earth and good will towards men. The peace of which the holy angels sang is the peace of God with the human race, peace of heaven and earth. This is the granting of the forgiveness of sins to the human race through our Lord Jesus Christ, who became man and suffered for our salvation.

Bishop Vladimir's Nativity Epistle

In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit!

Beloved in Christ fathers, brothers and sisters!

I wholeheartedly greet all of you with the radiant Feast of Christ's Nativity!

At one time, Saint Gregory the Theologian while in the church of Saint Anastasia in Constantinople being God-inspired exclaimed: "Christ is born-glorify Him, Christ is from the heavens-look for Him, Christ is on the earth-raise yourself...". Today we can only imagine what spiritual happiness enveloped the hearts of the listeners, those who first heard these words, which later became a true anthem of the Feast of Christ's Nativity.
